The 3 mile race course is an approximate distance. The only markings for the course are the geography of Naples Island itself. The race both starts and finishes at the same place on the beach, just south of the pier. From the start competitors make a straight line towards the edge of Treasure Island. It is then best to spot the far corner of Naples Island, rather than hugging tight along the boat docks. Then the island cuts away sharply at the point swimmers cross the bay's inlet/outlet. It is a wide open stretch, but easy enough to navigate by spotting tall boat masts passed the inlet. Look for boats at the island edge, not to the outside of the bay though, as that will keep down the distance.  After rounding the corner of Naples Island by the Long Beach Yacht Club, it is best to hug the island for the rest of the way to the 2nd St. bridge. The 2nd St. bridge marks the beginning of the swim buoy line along the beach. The pier that marks the finish should start to come into view, so look for it and swim straight!
